Jiaming Lake Hiking Tour
Jiaming Lake is one of Taiwan’s most beautiful high mountain hikes. Set deep in the southern Central Mountain Range, this remote alpine lake is famous for its blue water, open grasslands, sunrise views and dramatic high mountain scenery. The lake sits above 3,000 metres and is often called one of Taiwan’s most memorable multi-day treks.
Taiwan Adventures can arrange a private 3-day Jiaming Lake hiking tour with English-speaking guides, high mountain cabin accommodation, meals, permit support, route planning and safety management. This is a challenging high mountain hike and is best for fit hikers with previous hiking experience.
The Jiaming Lake trail also climbs two of Taiwan’s Baiyue, or Top 100 mountains, making it a rewarding trip for hikers who want more than just the lake itself. The route includes forest trails, exposed ridges, high-altitude terrain, mountain cabins and long hiking days.

Why Hike to Jiaming Lake?
Jiaming Lake is one of Taiwan’s most famous alpine lakes. It was once thought to have been formed by a meteor strike, but is now understood to have been shaped by glacial movement during the last ice age. The lake is around 120 metres across at its widest point and sits in a wild high mountain landscape of ridges, grassland and forest.
The hike is popular because it combines several of Taiwan’s best mountain experiences in one trip: high-altitude scenery, remote cabins, sunrise views, alpine grasslands and two Baiyue peaks. For many hikers, Jiaming Lake is one of the most scenic multi-day hikes in Taiwan.
Sample 3-Day Jiaming Lake Itinerary
Day 1: Chishang to Jiaming Lake Trail
We usually meet at Chishang Train Station in Taitung County. Pickups from Taitung or Hualien may be possible for an extra charge, depending on your travel plans.
After meeting the group, we transfer to the trail area and begin the first day’s hike. This is usually the shortest hiking day, taking around 3 hours, but it still gives the group time to adjust to the trail, altitude and mountain conditions before reaching the first cabin.
Day 2: Jiaming Lake and Baiyue Peaks
Day 2 is the longest and most demanding day of the trip. We usually hike for around 9–10 hours, depending on weather, trail conditions and group pace.
The route visits Jiaming Lake and includes two of Taiwan’s Top 100 mountains. This is the highlight of the trip, with open high mountain scenery, ridgelines, alpine terrain and excellent views if the weather is clear.
Day 3: Hike Out and Return
On the final day, we hike out from the mountain cabins, usually taking around 4–5 hours. After returning to the trailhead, we transfer back towards Chishang, Taitung or another agreed drop-off point.
The exact itinerary may change depending on permits, accommodation availability, road conditions, weather and group fitness.
Difficulty and Fitness
Jiaming Lake is rated 4 out of 5. This is a tough high mountain hike with long days, altitude, rough trail conditions and some exposure to heights. There are no fixed rope sections, but you still need good balance, strong fitness and the ability to hike for many hours over uneven mountain terrain.
Typical hiking times are around 3 hours on Day 1, 9–10 hours on Day 2 and 4–5 hours on Day 3. You should be comfortable hiking uphill and downhill for several hours, carrying personal gear, and sleeping in basic mountain cabins.
This trip is best for fit hikers with previous hiking experience. If you are unsure whether Jiaming Lake is suitable, contact us and we can recommend the best Taiwan high mountain hike for your fitness and experience.
Accommodation
We spend two nights in basic but comfortable high mountain cabins. These cabins are simple and shared, but they allow hikers to access the lake and surrounding high mountain trails without carrying full camping equipment.
Cabin availability depends on permits and booking conditions, so this trip should be planned in advance whenever possible.
