Shuiyang Lake
Shuiyang Lake Hiking Tour
Shuiyang Lake is one of Taiwan’s most atmospheric overnight hiking and camping trips. Hidden in the foothills of Jade Mountain and the Alishan area, this remote forest lake is famous for its still water, dead trees, misty scenery and quiet lakeside camping.
Taiwan Adventures can arrange a private 2-day Shuiyang Lake hiking tour with English-speaking guides, private transport from Taipei or Taoyuan Airport, meals, camping support, route planning and safety management. This is a great choice for hikers who want a memorable forest camping trip in Taiwan without climbing one of the island’s 3,000m high mountains.
Shuiyang Lake is sometimes called “Earthquake Lake” because it was formed after the 921 Earthquake, when the valley tilted and filled with water. The result is one of Taiwan’s most unusual mountain landscapes: a flooded forest surrounded by quiet trails, ridges and campsites.
Shuiyang Lake Trip Details
Location: Alishan / Jade Mountain foothills, central Taiwan
Duration: 2 days / 2 nights
Difficulty: 3 to 4 out of 5
Accommodation: Camping beside Shuiyang Lake
Best for: Forest lake scenery, photography, overnight camping, private groups, fit hikers and wild-feeling Taiwan hiking trips
Why Hike to Shuiyang Lake?
Shuiyang Lake is very different from Taiwan’s high mountain summit hikes. Instead of chasing a peak, this trip focuses on forest scenery, lake camping and a unique landscape created by one of Taiwan’s most powerful earthquakes.
The usual route follows an old forestry road through mountain forest to Shuiyang Forest and the lake. This is the most common and accessible way to reach the campsite, and it gives hikers more time to enjoy the lake, photography and the peaceful forest setting.
For stronger hikers, there may be an option to make the trip more challenging by including Luchu Mountain. This route is much harder but offers excellent views towards Jade Mountain, Taiwan’s highest peak, and takes you well off the beaten path.
Sample Shuiyang Lake Itinerary
Day 1: Travel to the Alishan / Jade Mountain Area
We usually begin with private transport from Taipei, New Taipei or Taoyuan Airport towards the Alishan and Jade Mountain foothills. Depending on the final plan, group arrival time and accommodation availability, we may stay near the trail area before starting the hike the next morning.
Day 2: Hike to Shuiyang Lake
After breakfast and a final equipment check, we begin the hike towards Shuiyang Lake. The usual route follows forest trails and old forestry-road sections towards Shuiyang Forest.
The hike normally takes around 5–6 hours, depending on weather, trail conditions, pack weight and group pace. On arrival, we set up camp beside the lake, prepare dinner and enjoy the quiet forest setting.
Day 3: Hike Out and Return
After breakfast at camp, we pack up carefully and hike back to the trailhead. We then return by private transport to Taipei, Taoyuan Airport or another agreed drop-off point.
The exact itinerary may change depending on road access, weather, trail conditions, campsite conditions and group fitness.
Difficulty and Fitness
Shuiyang Lake is rated 3 to 4 out of 5. It is not a technical climb, but it is a fairly tough overnight hike because of the long approach, rough trail conditions and pack weight.
The hike usually takes around 5–6 hours each way. You will need to carry personal gear, water, snacks and some camping equipment. There are also a few short fixed-rope sections, so a good head for heights is helpful.
The standard forestry-road route is suitable for fit hikers with some previous hiking experience. The Luchu Mountain option is much harder and is only suitable for very fit hikers who are comfortable with long days and rougher terrain.
Camping at Shuiyang Lake
We camp beside Shuiyang Lake in a quiet forest setting. Tents and group camping arrangements can be provided as part of the trip.
This is a natural lakeside campsite, so facilities are basic. You should expect a simple outdoor camping experience rather than a serviced campground. We follow Leave No Trace principles and ask all guests to help protect the lake, forest and surrounding mountain environment.
