Why Hike Huangzuishan?
Huangzuishan is a great choice if you want to experience the wilder side of Yangmingshan. Many visitors only see the easier trails, hot springs and viewpoints, but Huangzuishan feels much more remote because the route enters an ecological protection area with limited access.
The landscape is shaped by Yangmingshan’s volcanic past. Depending on the season and weather, the hike may include open grasslands, arrow bamboo, forest paths, crater scenery, small ponds and views across the northern mountains.
Because visitor numbers are controlled by permit rules, this hike often feels quieter than many other popular Taipei day hikes.
Permits and Advance Booking
A permit is required for the Huangzuishan route because the hike enters a protected ecological area inside Yangmingshan National Park.
Please contact us at least 2 weeks in advance if you are interested in this hike. One month in advance is better, especially if your travel dates are fixed or you are planning a private group trip.
Permit approval is not guaranteed, and the route may need to change depending on park rules, weather, trail conditions or availability.
Typical Huangzuishan Itinerary
We usually start with an early morning pickup in Taipei, New Taipei or Taoyuan Airport before driving into Yangmingshan National Park.
The hike begins near Qingtiangang. We walk across open grassland and mountain paths before entering the ecological protection area. From there, the route climbs and descends through remote terrain before the final ascent through arrow bamboo towards the volcanic crater area.
We usually stop for lunch in a suitable scenic spot before returning by the same route. If time, weather and group energy allow, optional extras such as hot springs or nearby Yangmingshan viewpoints may be added after the hike.
The exact itinerary can change depending on permits, weather, trail conditions, group fitness and safety.
Difficulty and Fitness
Huangzuishan is rated 4 out of 5. The hike usually involves 6–8 hours of walking on mountain trails, with climbs, descents, muddy sections, arrow bamboo and some exposure to heights.
You should have a good level of fitness and be comfortable hiking for a full day. This is not a technical climb, but the route is longer and more remote than many easier Yangmingshan hikes.
If you want a gentler Yangmingshan hike, we can recommend easier routes. If you want a harder Taipei adventure hike with fixed ropes and exposed ridges, consider Wuliaojian or Huangdidian.
