Nenggao Historic Trail

Difficulty 3 (out of 5) Duration – 2 days and 2 nights

The Nenggao Historic Trail is wonderful hike deep into the Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range.  The trail was first used by aboriginal tribes for travel and trade.  As the Japanese began to expand their influence in Taiwan during the occupation era, the route was expanded and garrisoned.  Finally in the 1950s it was used by the Taipower Company to build the east-west transmission lines.  Nowadays the trial has been given over to hikers and cyclists alike and makes for a great 2/3 day hike.

Day 0

We leave Taipei and head towards the central mountains.  We spend the night at the small village of Wushe at a local B&B.

Day 1

We get up early in the morning and finish the drive to the trailhead.  We then hike along the trail to the Tianchi Cabin crossing over the giant landslide and passing by the Haiyun Cabin, an old Japanese Police Station.  There are plenty of suspension bridges, waterfalls and great views along the way.

We either stay at the newly rebuilt Tianchi Cabin or, if hikers are still feeling energetic, climb up to the Tianchi Pond and camp on the ridge of the central mountains.

Day 2

From the Tianchi Pond there are two nearby peaks to visit, Qilai South Peak to the north and Nanhuashan to the south.  Both offer amazing views of the surrounding mountains.  After summiting, we pack up and hike back out.

The Nenggao Historic Trail is a fairly tough hike.  Each day we will walk for around 8 hours, with large packs on day 1.  There is some exposure to heights and high altitude..  A good level of fitness is required.

Typically pick up and drop off is from Taipei, but other locations can be arranged, including Taoyuan International Airport. We will travel by car or small van depending upon numbers.  All of our vehicles are insured and all drivers have local licenses.

All meals are provided for.  If you have any special dietary requests, allergies or needs, let us know and we’ll be happy to accommodate you.

The first night’s accommodation is in Wushe.  We stay at a small B&B.

Once on the mountain, we stay either in a cabin maintained by the forestry bureau or we can camp.  The cabin is new, but fairly basic.  We will need to carry sleeping bags and snacks in.

All of our guides are wilderness first-responder certified and carry first aid kits.  They have all spent a lot of time hiking in Taiwan and are very experienced in the high mountains.  All of our guides are native speakers of English, but also speak Mandarin and are very knowledgeable about the local mountains, flora/fauna, and culture.

Taiwan Adventures will provide you with $2 million NTD accident insurance.  However, you must have your own travel and medical insurance.  Our partners at World Nomads Insurance can provide you with travel insurance that covers you for high mountain hiking.

Prices for a 2 day hike to Nenggao start from $45,500NT for groups of up to 3 people. Additional people are $13,900. This includes guiding, transport, pick up and drop off from Taipei (other locations can be arranged), all meals, accommodation, accident insurance and permits.  All of our trips can be customised.  If you have any additional requests, please let us know.
