Smangus
Smangus Hiking Tour
Smangus is one of Taiwan’s most famous remote mountain villages, known for its ancient cypress trees, Atayal Indigenous culture, bamboo forests and dramatic mountain scenery. Often described as one of Taiwan’s most isolated villages, Smangus was only connected to the electricity grid in 1979, and the final road section to the village was not completed until 1995.
Taiwan Adventures can arrange a private 2-day Smangus hiking tour with English-speaking guides, private transport from Taipei or Taoyuan Airport, meals, accommodation support, route planning and safety management. This trip is a good choice for travellers who want a slower-paced overnight hiking experience with forest trails, village culture and some of Taiwan’s most impressive ancient trees.
The main highlight is the Smangus ancient cypress grove, where giant trees may be up to 2,700 years old. Depending on your itinerary, we can also visit the nearby Zhenxibao ancient tree area across the valley, making this one of the best forest and culture-based overnight hiking trips in northern Taiwan.

Why Visit Smangus?
Smangus is very different from Taiwan’s high mountain peak hikes. Instead of climbing to a summit, this trip focuses on mountain village life, ancient forests, Atayal culture and peaceful walking trails.
The village is famous for its community-based way of life and its remote location in the mountains. The road journey itself is part of the experience, with deep valleys, forested slopes and views across northern Taiwan’s mountain landscape.
For many visitors, the ancient cypress grove is the highlight. These giant trees are among the oldest and largest in Taiwan, and the walking trail through the forest is one of the most memorable easy to moderate hikes in the area.
Sample 2-Day Smangus Itinerary
Day 1: Taipei to Smangus and Ancient Tree Hike
We usually leave Taipei early in the morning and drive into the mountains towards Smangus. After lunch, we explore the village and hike to the Smangus ancient cypress grove.
The trail to the ancient trees is usually suitable for most reasonably active people, although it can be muddy or slippery depending on the weather. After the hike, we stay overnight in Smangus or another nearby mountain village accommodation.
Day 2: Zhenxibao Ancient Trees and Return to Taipei
On Day 2, we usually visit the Zhenxibao ancient tree grove across the valley. This area has another impressive collection of giant trees and forest trails.
After the hike, we have lunch near the old Atayal church area before returning by private transport to Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan Airport or another agreed drop-off point.
The exact itinerary can be adjusted depending on weather, road conditions, accommodation availability, group fitness and your travel plans.
Difficulty and Fitness
