Snow Mountain – Xueshan

Difficulty – 4 (out of 5)       Duration – 2 days and 2 nights

Snow Mountain (or Xueshan in Chinese) is the second highest peak in Taiwan, behind Jade Mountain.  The main peak stands at 3886m and has unbelievable views of the Sheipa National Park and its nearby mountains on clear days.

There’s nothing particularly technical about the climb to the peak, and the route from Wuling Farm is possibly the most scenic hiking trail on the island.

The trip can be arranged as either or 2 or 3 day hike, depending on the fitness of the hikers.

Day 1

Generally, we will arrive at Wuling Farm on the first evening to acclimatize to the altitude.  It is also possible to hike 1-2 hours to the first cabin and spend the night there.

Day 2

This day involves a moderately steep hike up to the 369 cabin.  The trail leads through a beautiful pine forest, before opening up and giving some great views of Nanhudashan and the Hehuanshan range.  Along the way we pass by the infamous crying slope (don’t worry, it’s not that hard!) and Snow Mountain’s East Peak.

When we arrive at the cabin, we settle down for the evening before eating dinner and enjoying the sunset.

Day 3

After spending the night in the 369 Cabin, we get up early (around 2am) for breakfast before making a start for the peak.  The aim is to arrive at the cirque or the top for sunrise. Once at the peak, we spend some time taking in the hopefully amazing views before heading back down to the cabin.  On the way down, you’ll have a chance to appreciate the Black Forest in the daylight.  This ancient forest of tall arrow-like firs is stunningly beautiful, especially in winter when snow often covers the forest floor.

Once back at the cabin, we rest, eat and pack and then make our way back down to Wuling Farm.

The first day involves a 1-2 hour walk.  The second day is usually around 6-7 hours and on the final day we walk for around 10 hours.  There is some exposure to heights and high altitude.  A good level of fitness is required.  Hikers are expected to carry around 10-12kg to the 369 Cabin.

Typically pick up and drop off is from Taipei, but other locations can be arranged, including Taoyuan International Airport.  We will travel by car or small van depending upon numbers.  All of our vehicles are insured and all drivers have local licenses.

For private trips all meals are provided for.  If you have any special dietary requests, allergies or needs, let us know and we’ll be happy to accommodate you.

The first night’s accommodation is at the Qika Cabin.  Hotels rooms in Wuling Farm can be booked at additional cost.  The second night is at the 369 Cabin.

All of our guides are wilderness first responder certified and carry first aid kits.  They have all spent a lot of time hiking in Taiwan and are very experienced in the high mountains.  All of our guides are native speakers of English, but also speak Mandarin and are very knowledgeable about the local mountains, flora/fauna, and culture.

Taiwan Adventures will provide you with $2 million NTD accident insurance.  However, you must have your own travel and medical insurance.  Our partners at World Nomads Insurance can provide you with travel insurance that covers you for high mountain hiking.

Prices for a 2 day hike to Snow Mountain start from $49,800NTD for groups of up to 3 people, then $13,800NTD for each additional person.  This includes guiding, transport, pick up and drop off from Taipei (other locations can be arranged), all meals, accommodation, accident insurance, and permits.  All of our trips can be fully customized.  If you have any additional requests, please let us know.
